Tiger Woods to play the PNC Championship in August

Tiger Woods is set to play the PNC Championship, which is played in August each year at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.

The former world number one has not played a major since August 2015 because of injury, but announced he is back in training this week.

The 43-year-old made the statement at the driving range at the home of the PGA Tour, East Lake Golf Club.

Woods also said that his son Charlie and daughter Sam, from his marriage to Elin Nordegren, would attend the event as spectators.

Woods said: “I haven’t played a competitive round since August of 2015 but I’m hitting the ball better than ever. I’m excited to get back on the golf course.

“My family and I are excited to be a part of this event and hope to come back and play as soon as possible. Charlie will be in the crowd and Sam will be there with me as well. We’re glad they can come out and see me play in this event.”

Woods won three times at the PNC Championship between 2000 and 2005, while he won the Open Championship in 2000 and was a runner-up in 2005.

He has struggled to regain his best form since returning to action in 2013.

He has won just four tournaments in that time and has not won a major since 2008, but he has been lauded by the likes of Ian Poulter and Darren Clarke for his struggles and willingness to play at the highest level again.
