Florida becomes latest state in United States to expect Florence-like hurricane

Two of the most devastating hurricanes on record have struck the northeastern United States in recent years, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned of increasing heavy precipitation causing increasingly damaging hurricanes in the Atlantic basin.

To prepare for this, NOAA has released the ERC – Advanced Coastal Cyclone Prediction – the first extension of the agency’s hurricane-impact forecast to incorporate hurricanes in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

The updated forecast makes 2017 Hurricane Florence, which hit North Carolina, the first 2017 hurricane to be included in the new forecast. Other hurricanes expected in 2019 include Hurricane Michael, which hit the Florida Panhandle and is being forecasted to move up the eastern coast and toward Virginia. The updated ERC provides the most recent forecasts for these threats to US communities.

It also includes significant sea surface temperature and peak-winds forecasts to support organizations’ disaster-preparedness efforts.
